    Description

    Experienced contractor sought by nonprofit.

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, United States Section (WILPF), is seeking a part-time contractor to gather materials for our monthly newsletter, edit them, and prepare them and work with our IT professional for e-publication.

This independent contractor position is expected to take up to 12-20 hours most months, for ten to eleven newsletter issues over a 12-month period, for $600 per issue. The contractor will work with an IT professional and consult as needed with volunteer national leaders to support and optimize WILPF’s electronic newsletter.

The editor may also work with WILPF US on other editing projects, for additional remuneration, as mutually agreed upon.

WILPF is a 501(c)(4) membership organization that envisions a transformed world at peace, where there is racial, social, and economic justice for all people everywhere. Our offices are in Des Moines, Iowa, but this position will be a virtual one, with communications conducted primarily electronically (telephone, email, Zoom, etc.).

    POSITION DETAILS

The independent contractor will manage and edit ten (possibly eleven) electronic newsletters (“eNewses”) per calendar year, generally monthly. Solicit and edit material, ensuring that correct permissions and copyrights are obtained and recognized; edit copy; and work with the graphic designer as needed for both the summary “eNews announcement” email and the complete online WILPF US eNews.

The contractor’s editing and preparation work on issues of eNews will be completed as soon as possible after the submissions deadline, which is usually in the latter part of the month. Generally, there will be no eNews in one month in the summer and one month in the December-to-January holiday period. Job duties include:

               - Solicit and edit diverse articles, using varying editing for different kinds of articles.

               - Prepare the edited articles for publication.

               - Submit the copy to the graphic designer, using the provided format template

               - Maintain communications with the designated liaison with WILPF, especially concerning any difficulties or unclear points.

               - Around the time of deadlines, check regularly for emails with submissions, questions, and/or concerns from (potential) writers. Confirm receipt of emailed submission within three weekdays.

    REQUIREMENTS

At least 9 month of professional editing experience, with journalistic editing experience a plus.

Knowledge of and ability to apply standard professional usages for punctuation and language.

Ability to edit diverse text into clear and engaging form.

Ability to work independently; prior independent contracting experience a plus.

Can use email reliably for communications.

Must be a U.S. resident with a U.S. bank account.

By Wed., Sept. 4th at 9am PDT/noon EDT, submit resume, cover letter, a 1-2 page writing sample.

    Please provide your phone number.
