Overview of Position:
The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia (LASEV), seeks an advocate with a passion for justice to join our Community Support Team, based in our Norfolk office. The Community Support Team is the front line for client contact, on-boarding clients for services in a variety of modalities, building community connections through outreach and education, and gathering and analyzing data to better inform service delivery. Founded in 1966, LASEV is a non-profit public interest law firm serving low-income clients in a variety of civil legal matters. Our mission is to promote the equal application of justice and remove impediments to fairness for the low-income and vulnerable families of eastern Virginia. We strive to both meet the individual legal needs of our clients and to challenge systemic injustice and the root causes of poverty and inequality. A passion for justice and a commitment to poverty law is a must.
Key Responsibilities:
Efficiently onboarding applicants in a variety of modalities, including walk-ins, phone intakes, and outreach events
Completing all aspects of the intake process with applicants, including information gathering, determining eligibility for services, accurately documenting information in our database, and appropriately triaging imminent legal needs
Developing and conducting informational workshops and building
connections with community members through regular outreach events
Increasing access to LASEV services through strategic service delivery
Developing and maintaining relationships with other local agencies
Maintaining accurate and up-to-date information related to additional resources and actively connecting LASEV clients with relevant resources
Assisting clients in applying for and accessing public benefits and services
Data gathering and analysis via publicly available and internal data sources to shape strategic delivery of services
Conducting community needs assessments and client satisfaction surveys
Requirements:
A four-year college degree from an accredited institution
Graduate degree preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Access
Capacity to work independently and collaboratively
Excellent communication, organizational, attention to detail, and time management skills
Commitment to LASEV’s mission
Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout our Hampton Roads service area
Spanish language proficiency preferred
Experience with DBR SQLite, ARC GIS preferred
*Please note that some weeknight and weekend hours are required
Salary & Benefits:
Annual salary DOE, starting at $50,000
Benefits: Excellent benefits package including health/dental/vision, disability and retirement benefits.
This position is full time (37.5 hours per week), on-site in our Norfolk office and throughout our service area, comprising the cities/counties of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg; Accomack, Gloucester, James City, Mathews, Middlesex, Northampton, and York.
