    Description

    GOKiC, www.gokic.org, is a POC-led nonprofit organization. Our mission is the liberation of BIPOC youth through technology and mentorship by developing decolonized tech education programs to nurture community leaders.

    The Educator for Geeking Out Kids of Color will develop and implement our established curricula, including but not limited to curriculum building and scaffolding, teaching, youth and family engagements such as recruitment, showcases, relationship building, and communications. Professional development is an ongoing expectation of this position which includes the attendance of workshops, conferences, and ongoing self-directed reading.

    • Educator (Hybrid, mostly in-person - South Seattle/SeaTac, WA)
    • Part Time, 20 - 28 hours per week
    • $25-$28 / hour
    • Start date: Immediately
    • We encourage college students to apply! This role is primarily works afterschool & afternoon.

    Essential Functions:

    Teaching

    • Preparation for classroom activities, virtual or in-person
    • In-class teaching, leading students through various activities and providing structure at a pace that considers all students’ capacity to follow along
    • Reflection of that day’s classroom session, with areas of celebration and areas of opportunity for improvement and growth
    • Tracking attendance and noticing trends over time
    • Evaluation and feedback of individual’s performance and improvement
    • Engaging with partners at respective sites

    Curriculum Development

    • Working with other educators in creating a program for subsequent classroom curricula
    • Testing curricula for the purposes of ensuring high standard of quality and enjoyment
    • Scaffolding

    Youth and Family Engagement

    • Recruitment of students to enroll in our programs
    • Showcasing our programs’ successes
    • Building relationships with our partners and community members
    • Communications via email with all vital members and participants of our organization

    Professional Development

    • Attendance of workshops in which team members will learn emerging skills helpful to performance of role
    • Conferences with similar non-profit organizations in further professional development
    • Readings on topics that parallel our mission and help create disciplinary breadth
    • Growth and Empowerment Process

    Administrative

    • Responding to and composing work-related emails
    • Being part of regular all-staff meetings
    • One-on-one progress and debriefing meetings

    Job Specific Qualifications:

    • Ability to use PC computers and MS Office programs with competency. Ability to use websites such as Google Drive, Calendar, Docs, etc.
    • Ability to pass a background check

    Core Competencies:

    • Knowledge of critical race theory with the ability to teach youth
    • Cultural competency (know positionality within classroom environment)
    • Basic knowledge of computing and coding
    • Foundational knowledge of teaching techniques and classroom management
    • Knowledge and skills to support social-emotional development in children
    • Basic knowledge of child development (youth attention span, repetition, etc)
    • Knowledge of project management (setting deadlines, planning, goal settings, etc.).

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Ability to communicate effectively across stakeholders (eg. parents, youth, partners, team members)
    • Adaptability and Flexibility: able to seamlessly transition between projects that may have very different demands and expectations.
    • Even temperament and Professionalism - controls emotions without retaliating against negative behavior. This applies to both the classroom (virtual or physical) while working with students and the workplace with colleagues in all possible interaction formats.
    • Multi-tasking - comfortable juggling multiple priorities (switching from teaching to curriculum building, for example)
    • Conflict resolution - comfortable with addressing conflicts and differences in a timely manner with the appropriate personnel.
    • Recruitment - being able to diligently identify potential students to enroll in our classes, whether in-person alone or in a team of partners and/or co-workers.

    Work environment:

    • GOKiC values the flexibility and potential for increased work-life balance when the team structure is built around the ability to conduct remote work. As an organization that engages in technology education, we are committed to embracing technology tools that serve us as individuals, as an organization, and our communities. We also will balance this with the need to build community and rapport within our organization and to fulfill our mission and serve our community effectively.

    • Hybrid/remote setting combined with travel and responsibilities performed in and around the service delivery area. All staff work from home and are in person as needed based on their job duties and responsibilities.

    • As of October 18, 2021, GOKiC staff are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless a medical or religious exemption has been approved. Philosophical exemptions are not permitted. As a condition of employment, newly hired employees will be required to provide proof of their COVID-19 vaccination.

    • As a youth serving organization, GOKiC reserves the right to conduct background and/or reference checks on all prospective volunteers, paid interns, and employees. Any offer is contingent upon clearance of such background and/or reference check as applicable. Any offer will be withdrawn if any of the above conditions are not satisfied.
